Greater Anglia extended contactless pay as you go to Southend Airport on 14 December 2025. From east or central London, it suggests the A12 or A13 before following Southend signs. The final approach has separate signs for parking and Express Pick-up and Drop-off, so the postcode gets the vehicle into the area while the airport signs decide the correct entrance.
A journey from Kent may use the A282 and Dartford Crossing. That creates a separate road charge with its own payment rules and deadlines. The airport's current bus page lists LeighLink 23A and Arriva routes 7, 8 and 9 for local journeys. LeighLink connects Leigh-on-Sea with the airport, while the Arriva routes serve places including Rayleigh, Rochford, Shoeburyness, Thorpe Bay and Eastwood. The stops are not all in the same place. The airport says LeighLink uses the stop immediately opposite Arrivals, routes 7 and 8 use Rochford Road, and route 9 stops behind the Holiday Inn on Eastwoodbury Crescent.
The X30 needs special caution. The airport page still says selected X30 journeys stop outside the terminal. First Bus published a network change stating that Southend Airport would no longer be served from 12 April 2026, although the wider X30 continues between Southend, Chelmsford and Stansted Airport. The operator's live journey planner and stop list should decide whether a particular journey serves the terminal. Do not walk to a guessed stop with luggage because an old airport paragraph mentions the route.
The airport's official taxi provider is Andrews Taxis. The rank is directly in front of the terminal, which the airport describes as about 50 paces from the Arrivals exit. A marshal and digital kiosk handle bookings. The airport specifically says a taxi from the airport can only be booked through the kiosk and marshal on the rank, rather than pre-booked in advance. That process differs from arranging a private-hire collection before the flight.
Ask the kiosk for the total or charging basis to the exact postcode before accepting the journey. A local Essex trip and a cross-London trip are different cost decisions. For a pre-booked private-hire vehicle, confirm where the driver will wait, whether parking is included, how flight delay is handled and what luggage fits. A direct train to Stratford or Liverpool Street does not mean the airport is 43 or 52 minutes from every London address. A journey to Canary Wharf may use the Elizabeth line or DLR from Stratford. Paddington, Victoria, Euston, King's Cross and west London need another leg. The usable comparison includes the platform change, wait, luggage movement and final walk. This matters when Southend is being compared with an airport that has a slower initial train but a better final connection.
Inter-airport journeys need an even larger buffer. There is no dedicated direct transfer from Southend Airport to Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, London City or Stansted that can be treated like a terminal shuttle.
